Would I say my family is fiercely loyal, smart, and generous? Yes. Intrusive and nosy (in all the best ways)? Also yes. My extended family can’t wait to welcome a child, and they will provide loving arms, wise guidance, bedtime stories, embarrassing dance moves, and so much more.
Growing up in the Midwest with my parents and grandparents, brothers and cousins, aunts and uncles nearby, I learned lessons and skills that formed the foundation of my life. From my family, I learned that integrity, honesty, patience, generosity, forgiveness, and humility are important qualities to share with our families and communities, over and over again.
Some things my family taught me:
The lady in the photo with the gray hair? She’s “Gran” to her grandkids. She is the one who made sure we invited the neighbors to play or share a meal, and she knows the birthdays of every member of our family for four generations. She is the one who taught us to say, “I’m sorry,” when we hurt someone, and to say “I forgive you,” when someone hurt us. She is overflowing with love and support.
I’m lucky to have this family, and I can’t wait to share all that I have learned from each of them with a child!
