Hello, and thank you for taking the time to get to know us!
We’re Sheila and Alexander (or Xandy), a loving family living just outside of Denver in beautiful Arvada, Colorado. Sheila is a fifth-generation Coloradan who grew up in Buena Vista, while Xandy was raised in Northern California, just north of San Francisco. Our journey together began at the University of Colorado at Boulder (go Buffs!), where we met in college, quickly fell in love, and have been inseparable ever since.
Together for nearly 20 years, we married in Boulder in 2011 and have shared a life filled with adventure, love, and deep commitment. Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of working and running businesses together, traveling to 25 different countries, and living in Seattle, Atlanta, and the mountains. But our greatest adventure began in 2022 when we were blessed to adopt our sweet daughter, Maya. She has brought endless joy into our lives, and we are so grateful to be her parents.
From the very beginning, we’ve dreamed of being a family of four, and we know in our hearts that there is still one missing piece to make our family complete. Both of us—and Maya, too!—are beyond excited to welcome another child into our home, to love unconditionally, and to share in all the little and big moments that make life so special.
We hope this book gives you a glimpse into our lives, the love we share, and the warm, supportive community surrounding us. Thank you again for considering us—we are truly honored.
Expectant mothers who choose to make an adoption plan may qualify for some level of financial assistance during their pregnancy. However, each person's situation and specific needs are different. Your adoption social worker can help you determine what level of assistance you qualify for and deserve. Many expectant mothers qualify for financial assistance to cover basic pregnancy and living expenses, including but not limited to - transportation reimbursement, utility assistance for phone, water, and electricity/gas, maternity clothing and supplements, etc.
It won't cost you anything. If you choose to place your baby for adoption, all of your medical and legal fees will be covered and you may be eligible for financial assistance with other pregnancy-related expenses.
Yes. Even if you don’t know the identity of the birth father, you can still choose to make an adoption plan. However, every adoption situation is different. The adoption social worker you’re assigned to will get to know you and your story first, and then guide you through the process accordingly.
You can make an adoption plan at any point in your pregnancy, even after the baby has been born. But, it's important to start the process as early in your pregnancy as possible. Connecting with those resources will allow you to gain access to important medical services, including prenatal care, to help ensure a healthy pregnancy.
One aspect of your adoption plan is the "Hospital Plan" an outline of how you'd like your hospital stay and delivery to go. You can craft this on your own or with the help of your adoption social worker. But everything is up to you. You’ll be able to choose who comes to the hospital with you, who is in the room with you during delivery, and how much time you’d like to spend with the baby before signing the final papers.
As part of your adoption plan, you'll determine whether or not you’d like to have an open or closed adoption or something in between. Open adoptions may include phone calls, messaging (via social media, email, or text), and/or periodic visits each year. Closed adoptions may include no contact at all or annual updates provided to the birth parent(s) by the adoptive family. Each post-adoption relationship is different and can vary based on what an expectant mother chooses in her adoption plan.
This month we took a family trip to San Diego to celebrate Sheila’s birthday and enjoy some much-needed time together. We stayed at the beautiful Hotel Del Coronado and spent our days chasing waves, building sandcastles, riding bikes, and soaking in the ocean breeze. One of the highlights was visiting SeaWorld, where Maya’s eyes lit up watching the orcas and seals play in the water. She had so much fun exploring, laughing, and making new friends—she always seems to find one wherever we go! Moments like these remind us how ready she is to share her big heart (and her sand toys) with a little brother or sister someday. . .
We absolutely love spending time together as a family, and one of the best parts of our flexible work schedules is being able to sneak away for little adventures, like a Friday trip to the zoo! Maya loves seeing all the animals (especially the baby ones), and we always make a day of exploring, learning, and laughing together. Watching her curiosity grow reminds us how much joy there is in discovering the world through a child’s eyes. We can’t wait for the day when we’ll bring kiddo #2 along to share in the fun, and maybe someday, take the whole family on a real African safari!
Birthdays are always a wonderful excuse to gather friends and family, and this year we celebrated Maya’s third birthday at home with lots of laughter, cupcakes, and playtime. Her big surprise gift was a giant bouncy castle, something we know will bring countless hours of joy in the years ahead. Maya had the best time jumping with her friends and has already said she cannot wait to share it with her future little brother or sister. Watching her excitement and generous heart reminds us just how ready she is to become a big sister. .
We’re so excited to be starting the adoption process again this summer! While working with our wonderful adoption agency, we’ve also been making time for family fun. This year brought some new adventures; our first camping trip (we can already imagine how much fun it will be with two little ones!), plenty of visits to the great playgrounds nearby, a trip to cabin with some of our best friends Amy and Dave, and even bike rides with Maya in our new two-kiddo bike trailer. We love spending time outdoors and exploring all the amazing activities Colorado has to offer, and we can’t wait to share those experiences with another child.
We were so happy to go to a wedding this year, Xandy's cousin Paige, who lives here in Denver got married to her longtime boyfriend Andrew in Denver this summer and ALL of his family came out for it! It was so great to hang out with all Xandy's family and tell them more about our plans to adopt again and complete the family! They all adore Maya and were so excited for us to adopt again. Both our families have been so supportive of us during our adoption journey, and we are so blessed to have such love in our lives.
