Hello! We are Dakota and Katie. Thank you for taking the time to get to know about us as adoptive parents.
During our high school years, we knew of each other and shared many of the same friends, but didn’t spend much time together. In 2016, a couple of Katie’s close friends made plans to go to a haunted attraction, and we met at a restaurant beforehand. Katie remembers clearly walking into that restaurant and seeing her future husband among the group! Once we arrived at the haunted house, Dakota ended up joining her group of friends. Afterward, we exchanged contact information as we knew that something special had sparked between us.
Dakota came to every fun event Katie’s friends planned after that, from movie nights and blanket-making sessions, to trying out random science experiments. Everything seemed to fall into place, and over time we slowly fell in love through continuing adventures.
In 2017, we moved to Boise together while continuing our education, and in January 2020 Dakota proposed.
In September of that same year, we were married.
Soon after our wedding, we decided we wanted to expand our family. After multiple fertility appointments and exploring IVF without success, we decided to pursue adoption. Adoption has always held a special place in our hearts, especially because Katie was adopted as a child. Her own adoption has given her a deep appreciation for the love, stability, and opportunities that adoption can provide, and it is something we are incredibly grateful to pursue as prospective parents.
Expectant mothers who choose to make an adoption plan may qualify for some level of financial assistance during their pregnancy. However, each person's situation and specific needs are different. Your adoption social worker can help you determine what level of assistance you qualify for and deserve. Many expectant mothers qualify for financial assistance to cover basic pregnancy and living expenses, including but not limited to - transportation reimbursement, utility assistance for phone, water, and electricity/gas, maternity clothing and supplements, etc.
It won't cost you anything. If you choose to place your baby for adoption, all of your medical and legal fees will be covered and you may be eligible for financial assistance with other pregnancy-related expenses.
Yes. Even if you don’t know the identity of the birth father, you can still choose to make an adoption plan. However, every adoption situation is different. The adoption social worker you’re assigned to will get to know you and your story first, and then guide you through the process accordingly.
You can make an adoption plan at any point in your pregnancy, even after the baby has been born. But, it's important to start the process as early in your pregnancy as possible. Connecting with those resources will allow you to gain access to important medical services, including prenatal care, to help ensure a healthy pregnancy.
One aspect of your adoption plan is the "Hospital Plan" an outline of how you'd like your hospital stay and delivery to go. You can craft this on your own or with the help of your adoption social worker. But everything is up to you. You’ll be able to choose who comes to the hospital with you, who is in the room with you during delivery, and how much time you’d like to spend with the baby before signing the final papers.
As part of your adoption plan, you'll determine whether or not you’d like to have an open or closed adoption or something in between. Open adoptions may include phone calls, messaging (via social media, email, or text), and/or periodic visits each year. Closed adoptions may include no contact at all or annual updates provided to the birth parent(s) by the adoptive family. Each post-adoption relationship is different and can vary based on what an expectant mother chooses in her adoption plan.
We spent Saturday at Ammon Days with friends, watching the hot air balloons set up for the evening balloon glow. It was a fun night enjoying good company and taking in one of our favorite local summer events.
Today was a toasty one! We hit 103°! Katie had to work, so Dakota and the pups stayed inside for an air-conditioned movie day while building LEGO. It turned out to be the perfect way to beat the heat! We're just waiting for Katie to get off and the backyard to fall into the shade so we can fire up the grill and BBQ some chicken on the patio this evening.
Today Katie took Astrid and Newt to the Vet! They are both happy and healthy! Astrid weighed in at 95.5 pounds and Newt was a whopping 9 pounds!
This evening, Katie and I noticed the Dragon Bowl food truck parked at Community Park, just a short bike ride from our house. We decided to ride our bikes over for dinner, and it turned into a perfect evening. We found a shady spot under a tree and enjoyed pot stickers, chicken and rice bowls, and some delicious Dragon Tea. The only disappointment was that they had already sold out of the mango and cream rice dessert, we'll definitely have to get there earlier next time!
