Favorite Summer Activities

During the summer, we love to get outdoors a little and enjoy the beautiful weather. We always make plans once a week to go geocaching. Geocaching is kind of like a scavenger hunt, except instead of finding a bunch of different items, you’re searching for a small pouch or container that has a scroll or book to add your name and then you log the cache on a website. You start with clues and geographic coordinates and the search is on! We’ve gotten to see so many different parts of our city: hidden gems of parks, monuments we didn’t know existed, and even some urban ones that were camouflaged as a screw on a stop sign! The best part of the whole thing is trying not to be seen: the best way I’ve heard it described is that “you can’t let the muggles see the magic”. We’ve found geocaches all over the world when we’ve traveled, too: Paris, London, Rome, Florida, Bermuda. It’s a great memory of the places we’ve been when we look up our log of caches found!

One things we love to do near the end of the summer is go to the Renaissance Festival in Tuxedo, NY. It’s so much fun to see the performers, to visit the shops and to people watch. The costumes, the masks, the armor! It’s amazing to see people’s creativity and ingenuity! One of our favorite performers is Shakespeare Approves! He takes well-known Shakespearean plays and turns them into interactive short improv pieces. They are always the highlight of our visit. Rob enjoys visiting the blacksmiths to watch them make bladed weapons while Melissa visits the silversmiths to see their beautiful creations. Even though we aren’t able to visit this year, here’s a picture we took last year!
