Our Traditions

Each year in December we go as a family to pick out a Christmas tree. Decorating the tree on the following day with ornaments passed down from one generation as well as treasures our kids have brought home from school. Keely makes holiday cookies with the girls and everyone decorates them. Greg makes Frozen Lemon pie from a recipe passed down from his great grandmother. Christmas eve we wrap presents and watch A Christmas story.

We color and hide Easter eggs, Memorial Day weekend we attend the Indianapolis 500 taking traditional tail gate food and making a day of it. Over the 4th of July we head to the family lake house and watch the fireworks brighten the sky over the lake. We also spend Labor Day weekend at the lake.

In the fall we pick apples and make cider and apple butter. I from our vegetable garden where I pick, process, and can tomatoes. We use those in chili and other soups. Each of us picks a pumpkin to carve for Halloween. We always cook down the butter nut squash and freeze it. That’s what we use for Pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving and chocolate chip pumpkin bread throughout the winter. As the ponds freeze we check the thickness of the ice before skating on neighbourhood ponds under the stars in the evening.
