Sunny Days and Vegetable Gardens

Tell me and I’ll forget. Teach me and I’ll remember. Involve me and I’ll learn.

I’ve always been a hands on learner, and love watching my kids learn in the same way. There is something about literally getting your hands dirty that makes the best life lessons. This weekend was a perfect example of this for our family.

Jacob and I tried our hands at gardening a few years earlier on in our marriage, and unfortunately never had great success. There were always issues like not enough sunlight…or really hungry critters. Now that we are in a different home, with plenty of sunlight and eager little helpers, we decided it was time to try again.

The girls were so excited to go to the nursery to pick out plants! We decided to pick out some strawberries, herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and squash. Tessa had her own gardening tools, fully equipped with outfit accessories and she was eager to get to work. When I was little and would help plant flowers/gardens with my Mom, I would always pat the dirt down afterwards and say, “Be a happy flower!” and thought that these were the magical words that would help the plants grow. Naturally, I passed these same magical words onto my girls. 🙂  Before I knew it, Tess was literally singing to the plants a sweet melody about “being a happy flower”.  Now the girls will be able to help care for these plants, and literally watch them blossom (well, hopefully blossom) into delicious produce! Kyla is super excited to literally eat the fruits of our labor!  Our plan tonight is to follow this adventure up by reading the Dr. Seuss book, “Oh Say Can You Seed?”.

We are loving the warm weather and are getting outside every chance we can get. Bike rides, bubbles, chalk, sprinklers and parks are filling our days. We are so thankful for the sunshine and for getting to hear sweet giggles as we watch the girls run through the water. Though one thing is for sure, amidst all of our daily fun, we still wonder every day if that will be the day when we get “the call”. Everytime my phone rings, my heart skips a beat until I see who is calling. Please know that we are so excited and already thinking and praying about whatever little one may be joining our family. We can’t wait to include our future child in these family projects too!
