Favorite Childhood Memory of Spring
This afternoon I took a walk in the neighborhood park by our home. It was a beautiful sunny spring day.
I suddenly heard “quack, quack, quack”. I instantly smiled, nearby the walk path was a mother duck and her 7 little ducklings. They were huddled together in a group chattering.
The 7 ducklings followed the mama duck across the walk path and into the nearby pond. Each duckling plopped into the pond. I watched as the mama duck made a “head count” before leading everone to across the pond to their nest. I took a snap shot (below) of the duck family. How cute ! ð
This reminded me of a favorite springtime childhood memory – reading the story “Make Way For Ducklings” and visiting where the book was written, the Boston Common Park with my parents.
I remember telling my parents that I wanted to bring the ducks a treat. I was thrilled when my mom suggested that I bring a bag of crumbled bread and crackers.
When we arrived at the Boston Common park, I was surprised by the “friendly nature” of the ducks. One adult duck came over to me and then a few ducklings followed.
My mother showed me how to feed the duck by putting crumbled bread into her open hand. I watched and smiled. I was very eager but nervous.
My father held my hand and I took some bread and put it in my other hand. I bent down and closed my eyes. Suddenly, I felt little nibbles on my palm and heard “quack, quack, quack”. I opened my eyes and 2 ducklings were nibbling at the bread in my palm. I smiled and now remember how happy I felt.
A terrific and special childhood memory !
