LETTER ABOUT THEM

We are a family of three, built by adoption, hoping to grow a little more.

We are an active family and spend lots of time out and about in our city. We live within walking distance of playgrounds, shops, restaurants, and lots of wonderful friends and neighbors. We can often be found at our local amusement park riding roller coasters or watching one of the local sports teams play. Julien is at an age where he likes to pick the activity for the day, and his top choices are usually outside doing something together.

We always knew we wanted kids and felt ready about two years after we were married. What we thought would be an easy road wasn’t so easy after all. After many miscarriages, we opened ourselves up to the idea of adoption. In November of 2017, Julien joined our family through open adoption. Julien is a sweet, energetic, kind little boy. He is fast friends with everyone he meets, and loves sports of all kinds. He is looking forward to becoming a big brother.

We are very close with our extended families on both sides. Both sets of our parents live nearby, and we get together with them often for dinner, hikes, sporting events, or ice cream. Beth has four siblings and Kenny has two. Some siblings live close and some are a few states away, but we are sure to see them at least a few times a year. Between our two families, Julien has six cousins between the ages of 1 and 7. When Beth’s family is all together, we love to talk, laugh, and eat! We’re a loud bunch and we all love each other. Kenny’s family is a little more quiet, and we love to spend time playing games or visiting different places to explore new things. Time with family is so special to us.

Beth works for a non-profit and is the director of a center for students who have dropped out of school. Kenny is a stay-at-home dad and does some part time work from home for an engineering company. He worked for many years as an SAT tutor before Julien came along.

As a family through transracial adoption, we are commited to providing our children with communities where they are not the minority. We are constantly learning from people of color and their experiences. We promise to make sure our children grow up around people who look like them and who can speak to their experience in a way we as white parents cannot. That is a life-long commitment for us.

We love our life together, and we can’t wait to add to our family. We love the concept of open adoption and that our children will know their stories. We know the process of adoption is a collaboration of people brought together by their love for a child. We’re looking forward to beginning this journey together with you.
